2026 with a compound annual growth rate CAGR of 65 percent according to research by Stratistics MRC The research cites major factors boosting market growth as Increased adoption of process automation and instrumentation products across industries e rising oil and re neries industry A shifting production approach from conventional practices to digitalized methods Growing regulatory compliances Increased usage and application of manufacturing execution systems MES programmable logic controllers PLCs supervisory control and data acquisition SCADA and distributed control systems DCS Rising adoption of the Internet of ings IoT across industries and increasing labor wages in major manufacturing hubs In addition to these growth factors Stratistics MRC noted growth restraints as high instrument failure rates and high implementation and maintenance costs is months cover series on instrumentation and control looks at some ways to overcome these restraints to achieve optimal process control As Stratistics MRC found a shift from conventional practices to digitalized methods in production is obviously contributing to market growth On page 14 Tom OBanion of Emerson Automation Solutions discusses new digital measurement tools that o er plants a signi cant set of improvements such as a owmeter that includes diagnostics that can indicate exactly what the meter is reading and relay that information back in real time Solutions like this provide plants and re neries reliable data that can be accessed at any time without having to wait Growing regulatory compliance in process industries is boosting the process automation and instrumentation market as well OBanion says automation and reliable diagnostics are a must especially if those diagnostic outputs are to be accepted by regulatory agencies which reduces the need for third party verification or pulling meters out of circulation to be sent to laboratories for testing veri cation and calibration In 2017 the oil and gas industry dominated the process automation and instrumentation market due to its huge demand for safety and reliability from exploration through delivery The energy and power segment is estimated to improve signi cantly over the forecast period to 2026 due to growing need for cleaner and smarter energy and high demand for nonrenewable sources of energy production According to the McIlvaine Company report IIoT Remote O M the power industry represents a 19 billion annual Industrial IIoT market growing at 8 percent annually Bob McIlvaine notes in his column on page 12 a substantial increase in purchases of gas measurement devices in the power industry over the next ve years In fact the purchase of instrumentation will expand faster than the construction of new power plants due to many factors including increased measurement and control at existing plants As the market for process automation and instrumentation grows it is hard not to recognize that the skilled labor market is in shortage as the aging workforce retires As OBanion says The Industrial Internet of Things and Industry 40 are not new concepts but fully implementing them and establishing that secure digital web that connects all elements of a plant is going to take a signi cant investment in technology but that is exactly where those new hires those digital natives will t in As more digital natives come on board many will agree now is the time to plan and invest in digital tools and infrastructure to future proof operations Investments in new concepts and technologies is what not only keeps the process industries and energy sector moving forward but also pushes our society ahead as a result Next month we look forward to celebrating these new concepts by announcing the winners of our 2018 Breakthrough Products Awards program and showcasing the innovative solutions introduced to the market in the past year Stay tuned T Editor in chief arichardson@ endeavorbusinessmedia com @
